This blog will serve as an extension of our class and create opportunities to share and critique our work. I encourage all of you to post your favorite shots each week and give feedback to each other. I will use this forum to extend my in-class critique and identify my favorite shots.
I am happy to announce that I will be having a show in the upper stairway gallery starting next week. It is entitled, "In the Bathroom - Four Decades at NESOP." This is a collection of images taken in the second floor bathroom beginning in 1984. For the most part these pictures were taken in the context of my evening workshop class. They not only chronicle the changing fashion over 25+ years but the changes to the bathroom. I'd like to think they are just fun. Here's a little tease.

Lasell Location Shoot
I'm not sure that the rainy weather wasn't a bad thing as we took advantage of some interesting interiors, did a nice job lighting those spaces and created a number of strong shots. Here are the one's that caught my eye.
If you think I'm going a little overboard with this whole shooting through obstruction technique just say so, but as of now I still think its cool! Thank you Connell.
A sweet little shot by Zofeen. Very romantic, not to mention, pink!
Very nice job by John. The wider frame creates a stronger composition which utilizes the white space to draw the eye to the subject.
Oh no! More shooting through obstructions. Thank you Jen.
This one by John really gets me going. Very Helmut Newton!
Is it photoshop? No, its photography! Thank you Jen for getting it in camera.
I see big things for this shot. Strong commercial potential with a tie in to Lasell's art gallery and this particular exhibit by big time designer Yolanda. Look for it on NESOPs graduation poster. Let the campaign begin!

Business Lifestyle
Everyone did a very good job managing their locations and handling the lighting. Special kudos go to Zofeen and Jen for their guerilla effort in Barnes & Noble. As I sometimes like to say, if you don’t get thrown out of a couple of places you’re not trying hard enough. Way to go!
Though I had a slight issue with the magazine the model was reading in the shot Zofeen presented in class it was actually a very good shot. Here is another one I liked.
It is very simple but has just the right amount of context as does this one by Jen in Brueggers.
These shots may not strike you as particularly interesting but they are the kind of shots a model would put into his or her portfolio. Here are a couple of nice shots by Carly and Elizabeth who worked the escalator at the bus stop.
Both of them are effective. On Carly’s (top) I like the wider framing and the inclusion of the shadows on the wall providing an interesting graphic. On Elizabeth’s (bottom) I like that she shot through the glass to get some interesting patterns and reflections.
I like this shot by Connell a lot. There’s just the right amount of context and action, a strong compositon and her reflection in the window is cool. Not to mention Jackie and Liz in the background doing a great job looking on.
This shot by John demonstrates another good use of the horizontal frame. The placement of the model in the frame is just right and the shallow depth of field helps to direct the eye to her. I also like the slight tilting of the horizon. It gives the shot a little extra something.
I really love this shot by Mattie. The blur, the bleed and the foreground obstruction all give this shot a sense of reality and immediacy. There may not be a lot of context and actually, the shot feels more like fashion lifestyle than business lifestyle but its still effective. And unquestionably, the shot of the week comes from Jen, courtesy of Bruegghers. This guy is delirious! Talk about the decisive moment. Everything comes together in this shot to create that unique moment. It may not be the type of shot you would put in your portfolio but its very effective and publishable.
